Ouarzazate (Morocco), February 4, 2016 - On February 4 took place the opening of the NOORo I solar plant, within the NOORo solar complex in Ouarzazate, which will, once completed, be the largest in the world. Presided over by King Mohamed VI of Morocco, the event brought together political representatives, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo and the French Minister of Ecology and Sustainable Development Ségolène Royal, and construction consortium executives including the President of TSK, Sabino García Vallina.
The construction consortium was led by the Gijón company and also comprised Spanish companies Sener and Acciona. With 160 MWe of power and 3.5 hours of thermal storage, the solar thermal power plant will supply 500 GWh of solar power per year, capable of meeting the demand of 135,000 households. NOORo I will avoid the emission of over 140,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
